Know what’s in your paint box

Most of us own a handful of tubes and pans, and half of them have lost their labels, or never had one worth reading. Then one day you’re about to buy a third blue you don’t need.

This sheet fixes that. Print it, then paint each tube the colour that’s actually inside it and write the name beside it. In one sitting you have a chart of everything you own, and the gaps show up quickly.

How to use it

  • Paint each tube with a swatch of the colour. Do one strong layer and one watered-down, so you see how it behaves.
  • Write the colour name (and brand, if you like) next to it.
  • Keep it near your paint box and add to it as your palette grows.
  • Not sure what to buy next? The beginner supply list has a split primary palette that mixes almost anything.

A tip: plain printer paper buckles when it gets wet. If your printer takes heavier paper, print on that. Otherwise, go easy on the water.
